We are racing through the year, with less than 100 days until the General Election on 7 November. Parliament is set to rise on 24 September, with the Government keen to get as much of its legislative programme through before then.
I’m getting around Upper Harbour as much as I can during the weekends and in parliamentary recess. I continue to really appreciate the opportunity to meet and talk with locals, so please approach my electorate office and let’s set up a meeting if there’s anything we can help you with or to hear your feedback or ideas.
My portfolios of Commerce & Consumer Affairs and Small Business & Manufacturing have seen me visit many businesses on the shop and factory floors, including in Upper Harbour. Everyone is looking forward to a stronger economy and that’s exactly what we’re focused on as a Government.
The new electorate boundaries at the election mean Westgate, Whenuapai, Herald Island, Schnapper Rock and Rosedale join Upper Harbour – so there are a lot more people I need to meet in the coming weeks!
Westgate Te Waiarohia Bus Station with Auckland Transport, NZTA and the PM
Set to happen in Westgate is the official opening for the new Westgate Bus Station and the opening of New Zealand’s largest K-Mart! Yes, we have much more work to do to deliver all the infrastructure required for the NorthWest’s growth, with the Minister responsible, Hon Chris Bishop, set to visit us. Rest assured, I’ll be giving him a free tour!

In this Government's first term, we have seen 34 new roll growth classrooms at Massey High School, Scott Point School, Lincoln Heights School, West Harbour School, Glenfield Intermediate and Massey Primary School, including three learning support satellite classrooms for Massey Primary School; a new school expansion with 30 classrooms for Scott Point School; and a redevelopment to address long standing condition issues for Massey High School.
Nine schools received funding for access to a Learning Support Coordinator (LSC) under Minister Stanford's direction that all schools across NZ with Years 1-8 students have access by from 2028.
Maths and Literacy! All 13 Upper Harbour schools received funding for access to a structured literacy intervention teacher, six schools received funding for access to a maths intervention teacher and four schools participated in the Maths Acceleration Programme, which involves small group tutoring to boost the progress of students who are more than a year behind the curriculum in their maths.
The MP has heard from many Greenhithe residents rightly pushing for the village and surrounding areas to return to the Unitary Plan 2016 zoning of Residential-Single House.
Cameron has strongly advocated for this to Auckland Council and pleasingly in the most recent PC120 iteration, which will be a hybrid of proposed Option A and Option B, the former Residential - Single House zone of 2016 is proposed to be restored.
“I remember Greenhithe successfully advocating for a single-house zone when I was an Auckland Councillor and we were finalising the unitary plan in the mid-2010s. For that to now be proposed, after the region’s big discussion on density, is brilliant. Well done to the Greenhithe Residents’ Association and those locals who took the time, but your work isn’t quite over yet. Keep engaged,” says Cameron.
Consultation on this change will be available in the coming months, but staff are still working towards a date for submissions to the Independent Hearing Panel. We will make sure we send a link in the next newsletter once submissions are open.

Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters legend, Craig McIlroy, and the team at Glasgow Contractors, took the MP through the stormwater pond renewal project at Link Drive in Wairau Valley today. It sees Swiss-engineered mobile dewatering technology dredging the pond with all the material then piped on-site, stripping out water and separating sand, gravel and stone in a single process, meaning significantly fewer truck movements and lower disposal costs. Desilting of stormwater ponds just got a lot more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. The adjacent carpark will also be vastly improved. The project is set to finish by December.
The MP enjoyed meeting and thanking ASEZ STAR student volunteers for their native tree planting efforts at Rosedale Park.
The public meeting on affordability in the Glenfield War Memorial Hall saw some great discussion. Thanks to hard-working neighbouring MP for Northcote, Dan Bidois, for initiating it.
Our Parliamentary morning tea with Hon Chris Penk MP drew a good crowd, with our new Minister of Defence offering up many insights across several of his portfolios and a great Q&A followed. Thanks to all the locals who attended.
A big West Auckland crowd turn out to Henderson Rotary's annual charity luncheon. Our PM was on great form.
"Old Goff" loses to "The Bucket Tree"
Hobsonville was a very worthy contender in Tree of The Year. Known locally as "Old Goff" or "The Orange Tree", this magnificent Sydney red gum (Angophora costata) on Williams Road is around 146 years old. It came in as a finalist to winner "The Bucket Tree" a macrocarpa in Tawa. Recount!
