Policy announcements
Growing more to feed the world
I've heard from farmers right across Selwyn who are frustrated by inconsistent rules, mounting compliance costs, and red tape that gets in the way of getting the job done.
That's why a National government’s practical farming reforms will make everyday jobs easier through nationally consistent rules, while continuing to protect the environment.
These include:
- Clear, consistent farm plans across the country
- Easier consenting for irrigation and on-farm water storage
- Simpler rules for drain maintenance, farm tracks, culverts and quarries
- Practical standards for fertiliser and effluent management
- More opportunities for on-farm solar, micro-hydro and energy storage
- Greater certainty for vegetable growers and food producers
- Easier provision of seasonal worker accommodation
For a district like Selwyn, where farming, horticulture and food production are at the heart of our local economy, these changes will provide greater certainty, reduce unnecessary compliance costs, and make it easier to invest with confidence.
All this alongside National's 10 commitments to farmers, including:
- No new taxes
- No price on agricultural emissions
- Greater water security for our regions
- Stronger biosecurity protections
- Better access to rural health services and vets
- More market opportunities and stronger farm-gate returns
We're backing the people who put food on our tables, care for our environment, and drive the Selwyn economy.

Remove right to silence when a child is murdered
National will make it a crime to withhold information from Police when a child under 12 has been murdered.
The right to remain silent should never be used to protect those responsible for the death of a child.
While Labour and their top coalition partner, the Greens, ask gangs for votes and line up for photos with them, National is getting on with the job of restoring law and order.
Since coming into office in 2023, we have:
- Banned gang patches in public places
- Given Police stronger powers to disrupt gang activity
- Made gang membership an aggravating factor at sentencing
- Put more than 1,000 gang members behind bars
- Slowed gang recruitment
- Helped deliver 37,000 fewer victims of serious violent crime
We're backing victims, supporting Police, and holding offenders to account.

Rolleston Residents Association Meet the Candidates
Thank you to the Rolleston Residents Association for hosting last week's Meet the Candidates event!
I’m really proud of what I’ve helped achieve here in Selwyn over the last three years - including the new after hours and urgent care centre, blood testing services, numerous new classrooms for our growing number of students, and much more!
The National Party is focused on fixing the basics and building the future so we can keep delivering for Rolleston and communities right across Selwyn.

Nicola Willis Visit
It was a pleasure to host Nicola Willis in mighty Selwyn last Thursday!
To celebrate International Rural Women’s Day we met with some of the district’s outstanding women farmers at the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) where we discussed the challenges facing rural women and the industry as a whole.
Next we stopped by Spex Seating where Roger showed us some of the incredible innovation his team do for people with complex disabilities.
Finally we met with some of our hard-working local businesses where we discussed how the National Party plan to back them further.

Ellesmere A&P Show
Nothing beats a day at the Ellesmere A&P Show!
From catching up with familiar faces to hearing what's top of mind for local farmers and families, as always it was a great opportunity to catch up with so many of you.
Selwyn's rural sector works incredibly hard to feed New Zealand and the world. National's agriculture plan is about backing that success by making it easier to get things done, supporting water security and ensuring our farmers can continue to grow, invest and thrive.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by for a chat. I always appreciate hearing your thoughts.
