Who is the National Party?

The New Zealand National Party was officially founded in 1936. It was formed through the amalgamation of the conservative Reform Party and the liberal United Party. It joined Reform’s traditional rural-based members and the Liberal’s city-based supporters under the same banner.

The National Party is now New Zealand’s second-oldest political party and the country’s most successful, having spent more time in government than any other political party in New Zealand.

A centre-right political movement, National’s vision is for a prosperous and successful country that creates opportunities for all New Zealanders to reach their personal goals and dreams.

We believe in limited government; national and personal security; equal citizenship and equal opportunity; individual freedom and choice; personal responsibility; competitive enterprise and rewards for achievement; string families and caring communities and sustainable development of our environment.

Why should I join the National Party?

The National Party is a membership-based organisation, existing entirely on the membership and financial support of everyday New Zealanders.

Since our formation, hundreds of thousands of Kiwis have joined us because National represents their values and the aspirations they have for themselves, their families and our country.

People support us to ensure these shared values and aspirations are represented in our parliament and ultimately at the heart of the Government where they can shape the course of New Zealand.

What can I do if I join?

As a member you can be as involved as much or as little as you like. You can participate in local campaigns, stand for local, regional or national leadership roles, help to formulate policy, attend conferences and events or become a candidate in future elections. Whatever your interests or skills we have a place for you, and we hope you’ll join us!
