Brewer's Brief - September 2025

05 September 2025

It has been a busy couple of weeks back in the electorate, with me even breaking into some local door knocking this week.

I'm hosting constituent clinics around Upper Harbour on Saturday 6, and Monday 8, September. You are most welcome to join me for a coffee, with the times and places at the bottom of this newsletter.

As well as getting around Upper Harbour, it was a busy end of winter in Parliament. As chair of the Finance & Expenditure select committee, I was pleased to present our banking inquiry report to the House.

National's Finance & Expenditure select committee members after they deliberated on the banking inquiry last month: Nancy Lu, Cameron Brewer, Ryan Hamilton, and Dan Bidois

This Government is all about looking under every stone as to how we can make our banking, supermarket, and energy sectors more competitive.

In banking, we've seen the greenlight given for Kiwibank to raise for more capital to help it expand.

The four big banks are now on a December deadline to deliver open banking to help consumers find the best deal and more easily change banks.

The Reserve Bank is also now consulting on how much capital the retail banks are required to hold aside (which was planned to keep rising this decade, but the costs are clearly falling on the borrower).

What's more, we want to see more fintechs empowered to add more competition, and for them to work with banks to deliver the likes of app-based loan products and better rates.

Anyway, I'm getting boring now!

Nearly 25,000 Brewer's Brief newsletters have been delivered into Upper Harbour letterboxes, with electorate surveys now being posted back to us. My survey can also be completed online via this link

Enjoy spring!
