Budget 2026 confirms that New Zealand’s economy is strengthening despite global volatility and the fuel crisis.
The Government’s strong economic management over the past two years means growth is forecast to continue, with 220,000 more jobs on the way and wages rising faster than inflation.
By stopping wasteful spending, finding savings and making careful choices, we are getting the books in order and keeping taxes low while continuing to invest in the frontline services and infrastructure that Kiwis care about.
We’re reducing borrowing, keeping taxes low and investing in what matters most: roads, police, schools and healthcare.
Budget 2026 is about responsible economic management to secure New Zealand’s future.

- The economy is expected to grow, on average, by 2.7% each year over the next four years, creating 220,000 jobs. Wages will grow faster than inflation in each of the next four years.
- Despite global turmoil, New Zealand will return to surplus in 2028/29 (one year faster than forecast earlier), and thankfully our borrowing will be reduced by $6 billion less than previously forecast.
- The Government is investing in key priorities like roads, police, schools and health. We’re delivering that with savings, so Kiwis still get the quality frontline services they deserve while we continue to keep taxes low and get the government books in order.
- We are overhauling the public sector to improve services, lift productivity and deliver better value for money by streamlining the number of government agencies and reducing the number of public servants. This will result in $2.4 billion of savings over four years which will be redirected into front line services.
