Wairarapa farmers and the wool industry have welcomed the Government’s announcement directing agencies to use wool products in the refurbishment and construction of their government buildings – a use Mike Butterick, MP for Wairarapa, has long advocated for.
Butterick joined industry leaders from across the country yesterday for the announcement in Parliament.
“This announcement is great news and has been a long time coming. This initiative heralds a promising future for the wool industry, and better outcomes for building users and the environment.”
“Our wool industry has faced many challenges, not least from the use of synthetic materials made with petrochemicals and other harmful agents, some of them shed microplastics and damage the environment.
“When you consider the whole-of-life cost, compliance with NZ standards, technical and functional requirements, supply, sustainability and wellbeing, wool products win hands down.
“Wool is a natural fibre which is both renewable, and biodegradable. It is also non-allergenic and improves indoor air quality by absorbing and neutralizing pollutants.
“When you look at these attributes alone the value of wool is a stand-out choice and when you add wool's natural flame resistance and insulating properties, it really is a no-brainer. Why would you use any other product?
“By choosing wool, this Government is embracing a product that is better for our environment, better for our farmers and rural communities and better for our economy.
“Leading by example will always be one of the best ways to show the world that this Government backs our farming industry…. and we are!”
