FamilyBoost

Labour's wasteful spending and economic mismanagement are driving the cost-of-living crisis and taking Kiwis backwards. Families with young children and childcare costs are particularly vulnerable as their household budgets are stretched thinner and thinner.

When household budgets are being stretched at every turn, parents are forced to make sacrifices they shouldn’t have to.

National has a plan to support them.

OUR PLAN

To support Kiwi families bearing the brunt of the cost-of-living crisis, National will introduce FamilyBoost – a childcare tax rebate of up to $75 per week on the costs of childcare.

This means more than 130,000 lower and middle-income families could keep up to $3,900 more of what they earn every year.

HOW IT WORKS

Families earning up to $180,000 will receive a 25 per cent rebate on their early childhood education expenses, up to a maximum of $75 per week paid directly into their bank account every fortnight.

HOW MUCH WOULD MY REBATE BE?

All families earning up to $180,000 with childcare costs are eligible. However, to ensure support goes to families who need it most, the maximum weekly rebate will gradually reduce for families earning over $140,000. Maximum weekly rebates for families earning $150,000, $160,000 and $170,000 are $56.25, $37.50, and $18.75, respectively.

For example:

  • Two parents earning $125,000 between them who are spending $300 a week on childcare would receive a weekly rebate of $75.
  • Two parents earning $160,000 combined who are spending $330 per week on childcare would receive a weekly rebate of $37.50.
  • A single parent earning $90,000 and spending $350 per week on childcare would receive a weekly rebate of $75.

HOW WE’LL FUND IT

FamilyBoost will be fully funded by reprioritising Labour’s wasteful spending which is not delivering value for New Zealand taxpayers.

Labour promised to cut spending on contractors and consultants. Instead, this spending has exploded. The latest data shows Labour’s annual spend has skyrocketed to more than $1.7 billion.

National will reduce spending on consultants and contractors, saving taxpayers $400 million a year across a range of government departments and Crown entities.

Labour’s priority is growing the central government machine. National’s priority is helping Kiwis get ahead. By cutting Labour’s consultancy spend National will make it happen.
