Melissa Lee

Melissa entered Parliament as a National List MP following National’s victory in the 2008 election, becoming New Zealand’s first MP of Korean heritage and the first Korean woman elected to Parliament outside Korea.

Born in Korea and raised in Malaysia, Melissa moved to New Zealand with her family in 1988. She began her career in journalism at News Media Auckland before transitioning into broadcasting. She became widely recognised for her work on TVNZ’s Asia Dynamic and Asia Downunder, where she worked as a presenter, reporter, director, producer and own the production company behind the programme, helping bring Asian community stories onto mainstream New Zealand media.

In government, Melissa served as Minister of Media and Communications, Minister for Ethnic Communities, Minister for Economic Development and Associate Minister for ACC. In her role as Minister for Ethnic Communities, she focused on strengthening connections between government and New Zealand’s diverse communities. Her approach was practical and people-focused, with an emphasis on building trust, improving engagement, and ensuring diverse voices were reflected in decision-making.

In Opposition, Melissa served as Spokesperson for Broadcasting and Media, Digital Economy and Communications, and Ethnic Communities. Across these roles, she has been a consistent advocate for innovation, digital connectivity, and ensuring that the voices of ethnic communities, particularly the new migrants, are heard and represented in national conversations. 

She travelled extensively across the country, meeting with stakeholders, organisations and leaders to hear directly from them and ensure government policies and support were reaching people on the ground. 

During her time in Parliament, Melissa has held a number of key roles, including Parliamentary Private Secretary for Ethnic Communities and Chair of the Social Services and Commerce Select Committees. She has also served on the Health, Education, Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committees, contributing across a wide range of policy areas.

Melissa has also co-chaired the Parliamentary Friendship Groups for North and Central Asia, and South and South East Asia, supporting New Zealand’s international engagement. In 2025, Melissa was elected as President of the Global Korean Politician Council.

As a National List MP based in Mt Albert, Melissa has built a long-standing connection with the Mt Albert electorate, developing deep relationships with local residents, community groups, schools and businesses for almost two decades. Through her regular presence in the community, she has seen firsthand how the area has grown and evolved and understands both the opportunities and challenges that come with that change. She remains committed to being accessible, listening to local voices, and continuing to serve the people of Mt Albert with dedication.

Her background continues to shape her work in Parliament, particularly her commitment to championing ethnic community voices within government and ensuring their contributions are recognised as part of New Zealand’s success.

멜리사 리 의원은 2008년 총선에서 국민당(National Party) 비례대표 의원으로 뉴질랜드 국회에 입성했으며, 한국계 최초의 뉴질랜드 국회의원이자 외국 국회에 입성한 최초의 한국계 여성 국회의원으로 기록되었습니다.

한국에서 태어나 말레이시아에서 성장한 멜리사 리 의원은 1988년 가족과 함께 뉴질랜드로 이주했습니다. 이후 오클랜드의 뉴스미디어 업계에서 언론인으로 경력을 시작한 뒤 방송 분야 전반으로 활동 영역을 넓혔습니다. 특히 TVNZ의 대표 아시아 프로그램인 《Asia Dynamic》과 《Asia Downunder》에서 진행자, 기자, 연출자, 프로듀서로 활동했으며, 해당 프로그램의 제작사를 운영하기도 했습니다. 이를 통해 뉴질랜드 주류 사회에 아시아 커뮤니티의 다양한 이야기를 소개하는 데 큰 역할을 했습니다.

정부에서는 미디어·커뮤니케이션부 장관,다문화부 장관, 경제개발부 장관, ACC(사고보상공사) 부장관을 역임했습니다. 특히 다문화부 장관 재임 시절에는 정부와 뉴질랜드 내 다양한 커뮤니티 간의 연결을 강화하는 데 중점을 두었습니다. 실질적이고 사람 중심적인 접근을 바탕으로 신뢰 구축과 소통 확대, 그리고 다양한 목소리가 정책 결정 과정에 반영될 수 있도록 힘써 왔습니다.

야당 시절에는 방송·미디어, 디지털 경제·통신, 다문화 커뮤니티 분야의 대변인직을 역임했습니다. 그 당시부터 혁신과 디지털 연결성의 중요성을 꾸준히 강조해왔으며, 특히 신규 이민자를 포함한 다양한 다문화 커뮤니티의 목소리가 뉴질랜드 사회 전반의 논의 속에 반영될 수 있도록 적극적으로 활동해왔습니다.

또한 전국 각지를 직접 방문하며 지역사회 지도자, 기관 및 다양한 이해관계자들과 만나 현장의 목소리를 청취했고, 정부 정책과 지원이 실제 지역사회에 효과적으로 전달되고 있는지 확인하는 데 힘써왔습니다.

국회의원 재임 기간 동안에는 다문화부 정무차관(Parliamentary Private Secretary for Ethnic Communities)을 비롯해 사회복지위원회와 상무위원회 위원장 등 여러 요직을 역임했습니다. 또한 보건·교육·경제개발·과학기술혁신위원회 등 여러 상임위원회에서 활동하며 폭넓은 정책 분야에 실질적인.기여를 해 오고 있습니다.

이와 함께 북·중앙아시아 및 남·동남아시아 국회의원 친선협회 공동의장을 맡아 뉴질랜드의 국제 교류 확대에도 기여했습니다. 2025년에는 세계한인정치인협의회(Global Korean Politicians Council) 의장으로 선출되었습니다.

현재 멜리사 리 의원은 마운트 앨버트(Mt Albert) 지역구 국민당 비례대표 국회의원으로서, 지난 약 20년 동안 지역 주민, 커뮤니티 단체, 학교 및 지역 비즈니스와 두터운 신뢰관계를 구축해왔습니다. 지역사회와 꾸준히 소통하며 마운트 앨버트 지역의 성장과 변화 과정을 가까이에서 지켜봐 왔으며, 그 성장과 변화가 가져온 기회와 과제 또한 깊이 이해하고

있습니다. 앞으로도 지역 주민들의 목소리에 귀 기울이며, 언제나 가까이에서 함께하는 국회의원으로 최선을 다해 봉사하고자 합니다.

이민자로서의 배경은 지금도 그녀의 정치 활동에 중요한 기반이 되고 있습니다. 특히 다양한 소수민족 커뮤니티의 목소리를 정부 안에서 대변하고, 이들의 기여가 뉴질랜드 발전의 중요한 일부로 인정받을 수 있도록 지속적으로 힘을 쓸 것입니다.
