David MacLeod

MP for New Plymouth

David is proud to serve as the Member of Parliament for New Plymouth and lives in the electorate with his wife, Leasa. Together they are the parents of three adult children. Integrity, community, and family are central to his work and values.

Growing up on a dairy farm in Manaia as one of eight children, he developed a good work ethic, resilience, and a deep belief in the importance of supporting others. These values continue to guide his approach to public service. He believes that strong families, caring communities, and rewarding hard work are key to addressing many of the challenges facing society.

He brings a practical, results-focused approach to his role, and is dedicated to advocating for New Plymouth and the wider Taranaki region. He currently serves on the Environment Select Committee and is Chair of the Māori Affairs Select Committee.

David is also known for his extensive knowledge of the energy sector, developed through decades of hands-on experience. As a qualified registered electrician, he entered business ownership at the age of 23 when he bought into a local electrical company in Hāwera. Over the following 30 years, he expanded the company from a team of six into a medium-sized, multi-disciplinary electrical business operating across domestic, rural, commercial, and industrial sectors. He sold the company to a large New Zealand-based corporate in 2023 and continues to deepen his expertise in the field.

Alongside his business career, he developed extensive governance experience. At 29, he was elected to the Taranaki Regional Council, where he later served 15 years as Chair. He has also held governance roles as a director of Parininihi ki Waitōtara, Fonterra, and Port Taranaki, and as Chair of Predator Free 2050.

He welcomes the opportunity to hear from constituents and remains committed to representing the issues that matter most to the people of New Plymouth.
