National’s plan for parents

National’s plan will deliver a better future for parents and their children.

From Monday 26 October, Kiwis will be able to vote on New Zealand’s future.

National has a plan to help you secure your future, whether you’re a young person starting out, a parent raising your family, or in your retirement.

This election, there is a clear choice between sticking with National’s plan for a more secure future, no matter the stage of your life, with a growing economy, less debt, more jobs and higher wages.

Or going back to Labour – propped up by the Greens, Te Pati Māori and Opportunity – who will undo the progress New Zealand has made over the last three years, leaving you to pay for it through at least nine new taxes costing households $2,263 each year.

By sticking to National’s plan, we will deliver a better future for parents and their children. A future where parents don’t have to pick between working and looking after their children. A future where your household’s finances are better off, so you can treat your family to that holiday you’ve been saving for.

When you are raising a family, you want a government that supports you through the journey, and National shares your aspirations for a future where you get to spend more of your hard-earned money and your children prosper.

What we'll do

1

Ensure financial literacy

is part of the school curriculum to help children develop good money habits and skills for life.

2

Make opening a child’s bank account more streamlined

and easier for parents by progressing amendments to the Anti Money Laundering legislation.

3

Rolling out 3-day postnatal stays

to better support mums and their newborns to get off to a great start.

4

Strengthening KiwiSaver to build greater savings nest eggs

with automatic enrolment at birth, a $1,500 Baby Boost and continued contributions during paid parental leave, alongside compulsory contributions for workers and rising default contribution rates.

5

Wider access to 5 per cent home loan deposits

through the First Home Loan Scheme so more first-home buyers can purchase with a 5 per cent deposit, rather than the standard 20 per cent.

6

More grocery competition

by pursuing a separation of New World and PAK’nSAVE, because even though food inflation has fallen under National, groceries are still too expensive.

7

The Home Energy Fund

so families can take more control over their power bills by installing solar, insulation or a heat pump and paying the cost back through their rates over time.

8

More medicines

for cancer and other serious illnesses with a further $604 million investment in Pharmac, building on the $604 million invested by the National-led Government in 2024.

9

No new taxes

so hardworking parents get to keep more of what they earn and have more choices for their family.
