National’s commitment to build the future for Kiwis
National Leader Christopher Luxon has today given his personal commitment to New Zealanders on what National will deliver if re-elected on November 7.
“National has kept the promises we made to New Zealanders in 2023, including delivering tax relief for the first time in 14 years,” Mr Luxon says.
“After inheriting an economic recession, National’s focus on fixing the basics in the economy has helped get New Zealand growing again.
“With 2.6 per cent growth in the year to June, our economy grew faster than Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and the European Union over the same period. That’s set to create 220,000 more jobs over the next four years.
“The previous Labour Government spent taxpayer money at one of the fastest rates in our history. Debt tripled, from $60 billion to almost $180 billion, and doubled as a share of GDP. Kiwis were left paying the price.
“Labour has shown it hasn’t learned anything and remains economically incapable of delivering the secure financial future New Zealanders have worked so hard for.
“This time, there are at least nine new taxes on the table between Labour and its prospective coalition partners. The choice for New Zealanders is between that, or no new taxes and a clear plan to fix the basics and build the future with National.
“National will continue to make the necessary choices to reprioritise wasteful spending, so we can invest in frontline services without blowing the books or needing new taxes and loading on more debt.
“In education, we’ve delivered an hour of reading, writing and maths each day, banned cell phones in class, rolled out structured literacy and maths, and will instigate a social media ban for under 16-year-olds.
“In law and order, there are 37,000 fewer victims of crime, no more gang patches, ram raids are down 85 per cent and there are more Police on the beat.
“We have brought in the biggest planning reforms in a generation, backed our farmers with commonsense changes, supported business with incentives such as Investment Boost, secured the India FTA, and increased exports by $20 billion.
“But the job is not done yet.
“This election, my commitment to New Zealanders is:
- Economic growth that delivers new jobs and higher wages
- No new taxes so you keep more of what you earn
- Compulsory KiwiSaver with higher contributions and a $1500 Baby Boost
- Paid Parental Leave extension from 26 to 30 weeks
- Better school results by replacing NCEA, regular assessment and teaching the basics brilliantly
- Tougher consequences for criminals and more Police patrols
- Faster healthcare and more medicines on top of 33 new cancer medicines already delivered
- Better infrastructure with Roads of National Significance, new classrooms and new and upgraded hospitals
- A better deal at the supermarket by driving competition
- Books in surplus so we don’t saddle our kids with new debt or more taxes.
“New Zealand can’t afford to put this all at risk with a Labour-Greens-Te Pati Māori-Opportunity Party coalition.
“If re-elected, National will continue to deliver on its plan to secure the future for all New Zealanders,” Mr Luxon says.
