Five new taxes a bottom line for Te Pāti Māori

26 August 2026

Te Pāti Māori has put five new taxes on the table that could be used to help Labour fund its $18 billion of spending promises, National’s Campaign Chair Simeon Brown says.

“Kiwis have just got a good look at what a Labour Government would look like, with Te Pāti Māori putting five new taxes firmly on the table – a stamp duty on every household, a bach tax, an international company tax, a land tax and a wealth tax.

“To make matters worse, Te Pāti Māori is also calling for increases to the corporate tax rate and the top income tax rate.

“Chris Hipkins can’t credibly dismiss these taxes while Labour has an $18 billion bill to pay for and has already announced plans to increase Government revenue to 33 per cent of GDP.

“New taxes are a necessity for Labour to make its spending promises add up. Chris Hipkins just hasn’t come clean about which ones he plans to implement.

“Today, Rawiri Waititi said transformational tax changes were a bottom line, and that there was a greater chance of a wealth tax given the Greens have also committed to one.

“Labour, the Greens, Te Pāti Māori and the Opportunity Party are united by one thing: tax, tax, tax and more tax.

“They can’t stop dreaming up new ways to take more money off hardworking Kiwis.

“The choice couldn’t be more stark, with National promising no new taxes. The only way to stop the biggest tax grab in history is to party vote National.”
