Maureen Pugh to retire at 2026 election

23 January 2026

National West Coast-Tasman MP Maureen Pugh will step away from politics at this year’s General Election.

“It has been such a privilege to be an advocate for the people of the West Coast and Tasman, first as a list MP and then in winning the West Coast-Tasman seat at the 2023 Election,” Maureen Pugh says.

“This decade of my life as an MP has been an honour, as was my nine years’ service as Mayor of Westland, the Coast’s first woman mayor.

“The people of West Coast-Tasman have a fierce and loyal advocate in Wellington – I have always flown the flag high when it comes to the interests of my constituents. This place is easy to love and fight for,” Mrs Pugh says.

“The West Coast is a region I am passionate about and it was important to champion regional development, infrastructure and conservation here and in the beautiful Tasman District. The Coast is particularly special to me being my home, and my hope is that whoever follows in my footsteps will continue to cherish its uniqueness, unspoilt beauty and special character.

“I am thankful that I was given the opportunity to be Assistant Speaker in Parliament, a role that I have loved and one that has taught me a lot, particularly about patience as well as being ‘hands on’ in the processes of democracy. I look forward to continuing in this role over the year ahead, alongside working hard to ensure that a National-led government is re-elected on 7 November.

“However, after this year’s election it will be time for me to rest a little.

“I’ll be reclaiming my gardens from the rampant West Coast bush, listening to more country music, and taking a little time to appreciate the many blessings in my life. My family sacrificed a lot of time with me so I could do my job in Wellington. It's taken a while to make this decision, but I've learned the hard way just how short and precious life is. It’s time to devote more of me to my family,” Mrs Pugh says.

The National Party candidate for the West Coast-Tasman electorate for the 2026 election will be announced in due course.
