National’s plan for parents

24 October 2026Christopher Luxon

National has a clear plan to support New Zealanders at every stage of life to have a more secure future, National Leader Christopher Luxon says.

“From Monday 26 October, Kiwis will be able to vote on New Zealand’s future.

“The choice is clear. Stick with National’s plan for a more secure future, or risk it all by going back to Labour, propped up by the Greens, Te Pati Māori and Opportunity with Chloe Swarbrick as Finance Minister.

“Labour would undo the progress New Zealand has made over the past three years, but National has a clear plan for parents and those thinking of starting a family – one that does not leave you or your children paying higher taxes.

“Parents are already better off under National, with a $120 per week FamilyBoost rebate on childcare, tax relief for working families, a better education for children with one hour of reading writing and maths each day, and more new medicines.

“National is aspirational for our kids, and we know their parents are too. That’s why we’ll give families more tools to build a secure future with more choices.”

If re-elected, as part of its Plan for Parents, National will:

  • Ensure financial literacy is part of the school curriculum to help children develop good money habits and skills for life.
  • Make opening a child’s bank account more streamlined and easier for parents by progressing amendments to the Anti Money Laundering legislation.

National will also support parents and families through:

  • Rolling out 3-day postnatal stays to better support mums and their newborns to get off to a great start.
  • Strengthening KiwiSaver to build greater savings nest eggs, with automatic enrolment at birth, a $1,500 Baby Boost and continued contributions during paid parental leave, alongside compulsory contributions for workers and rising default contribution rates.
  • Wider access to 5 per cent home loan deposits, through the First Home Loan Scheme so more first-home buyers can purchase with a 5 per cent deposit, rather than the standard 20 per cent.
  • More grocery competition, by pursuing a separation of New World and PAK’nSAVE, because even though food inflation has fallen under National, groceries are still too expensive.
  • The Home Energy Fund, so families can take more control over their power bills by installing solar, insulation or a heat pump and paying the cost back through their rates over time.
  • More medicines for cancer and other serious illnesses with a further $604 million investment in Pharmac, building on the $604 million invested by the National-led Government in 2024.
  • No new taxes, so hardworking parents get to keep more of what they earn and have more choices for their family.

“National’s plan will deliver a better future for parents and their children. A future where your household’s finances are in better shape, so you can treat your family to that holiday you’ve been saving for,” Mr Luxon says.

“Labour will undo the progress we’ve all made, putting our economy at risk with reckless spending and at least nine new taxes which would cost $2263 per household every year.

“National’s plan is working, and we need three more years to finish the job. To stick with the plan, party vote National.”
