Canada, NZ agree to boost trade and investment

New Zealand and Canada will set up an annual Trade and Investment Dialogue to grow trade and lift exports, Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay says.

“Canada represents a market of nearly 42 million people with a GDP of close to NZ$4.5 trillion. Our trade and investment with Canada is growing but we can do much more,” Mr McClay says.

“We already collaborate with Canada as members of the CPTPP and the WTO. This Dialogue is about boosting trade between us. It’s also a regular place to sit down with Canada and work through challenging international and domestic trade issues.”

Canada is a G7 economy and New Zealand’s tenth largest export market. Two-way trade between New Zealand and Canada totalled NZ$3.46 billion in the year ending June 2026. New Zealand exports to Canada were NZ$2.18 billion, with key exports including meat, travel services, beverages, fruit and dairy. Canadian exports to New Zealand were worth NZ$1.28 billion, including machinery, fertilisers, travel services, other business services and mineral substances.

The Dialogue will take place annually at senior officials’ level and lead to an annual meeting of trade ministers.

“Kiwi exporters are already doing well in Canada. This is about helping them do more, as we work towards doubling the value of our exports by 2034,” Mr McClay says.
