The simple question Labour MPs must answer

20 August 2026

Senior Labour MP Ayesha Verrall is continuing Labour’s lie that the Capital Gains Tax is Labour’s only new tax, National’s Campaign Chair Simeon Brown says.

“On Newstalk ZB this morning, Ayesha Verrall was repeatedly asked why Labour continues to claim that a Capital Gains Tax is Labour’s only new tax, when it has a policy to hike taxes on business owners by 20 per cent upon buying new equipment.

“She repeatedly refused to address the Business Tax and instead doubled down on the lie peddled by her leader Chris Hipkins that the Capital Gains Tax is Labour’s only new tax.

“The question for Labour MPs today is simple – if the Capital Gains Tax is Labour’s only new tax, can you guarantee the changes you make to Investment Boost will not increase anyone’s tax bill?

“If they cannot guarantee this, then Labour needs to stop lying to New Zealanders and admit that it is campaigning on a raft of new taxes to pay for its $18 billion of spending promises.

“The tax choice this election is clear. A National Government that believes Kiwis should keep more of what they earn, or a Labour-Greens-Te Pati Māori-TOP coalition that wants to impose 9 new taxes on hardworking New Zealanders.”
