The opening of Auckland’s $1.4 billion Waterview Tunnel, the country’s biggest and most complex roading project, is the most significant change in Auckland’s transport system since the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 1959.
Wider economic benefits are estimated to be worth $430 million, through improved productivity and reduced travel time, and also include the creation of more than 18,000 jobs during the construction of the tunnel.
Already, the tunnel is saving people valuable travel time. This morning, people enjoyed shorter commutes and less time on the road with the new tunnel.
Auckland has grown up. The Waterview Tunnel is magnificent. Just got to the airport in 25m from the Shore @AklTransport ✔️✔️✔️

We are New Zealand's infrastructure government and we are excited that NZ’s most ambitious transport infrastructure project is now open to vehicles.
