SIGN DR SHANE RETI’S PETITION CALLING ON LABOUR TO SUPPORT HIS BILL WHICH WOULD ALLOW KIWI KIDS WITH CANCER TO CONTINUE TO RECEIVE UNFUNDED CANCER MEDICINES IN PUBLIC HOSPITALS. NZ FAMILIES SHOULDN’T HAVE TO PAY $1000 A WEEK IF THEIR CHILDREN HAVE CANCER. IT’S JUST AN ARMCHAIR IN A CHEMO SUITE FOR 4 HOURS – BE FAIR, GIVE THEM A CHAIR.
Earlier this year, the Labour Government decided it was discriminatory that children with cancer could receive unfunded medications in public hospitals, but children with other medical conditions could not.
However, instead of extending the right to children suffering from other illnesses, they have expressed their intention to take it away from children who are battling cancer.
Dr Reti’s bill would continue to allow a kiwi child diagnosed with cancer and needing chemotherapy to receive that chemotherapy free of charge in a public hospital. Parents, families, whānau, and communities would not have to try and find an extra $1000 per week to pay for their child in a private facility often hours away from their local public hospital. Our children with cancer just need an armchair and a shared chemo nurse for 4 hours – is that too much to ask ?
National’s Health spokesperson Dr Shane Reti and the NZ Cancer Society have been fighting for this on behalf of Kiwi kids with cancer ever since Labour proposed this cruel policy change.
Dr Reti drafted a private member’s bill that would simply make it lawful for cancer patients to receive funded and unfunded cancer treatment in our public hospitals. It comes to its First Reading in the next few months and needs to be sent to select committee where whanau and parents can tell their stories.
Kids with cancer need the Labour Government to pass this bill. Labour’s parliamentary majority makes them the ultimate deciders and if they vote down my bill that’s it.
Join Dr Reti, National and the Cancer Society in calling for the Labour Government to support children with cancer and their families.
Sign our petition to urge the Government to vote in favour of Dr Shane Reti’s bill and send it to select committee so that the people who Labour’s cruel policy effects can have their chance to speak.
This is about what is right and fair. It is wrong that the Labour Government has made saving a child’s life reliant on whether or not their family can afford their treatment.
PETITION: Stop Labour removing Kiwi kids' free cancer treatment in hospital
