David's Digest - May 2024

Welcome to David's Digest, my regular newsletter where I hope to share news, updates, and snapshots from my time in parliament and around the electorate. As my first official newsletter as MP for New Plymouth, I want to use this edition to reflect on my first six months in the role.

Following the successful election and the formation of our coalition Government, we have been hard at work rebuilding the economy and delivering on commitments to improve the lives of New Zealanders. Achieving our 100-day plan and introducing 9 key targets across health, education, law and order, work, housing, and the environment, shows our Government is serious about delivering the change we promised.

I was honoured to be appointed Chair of the Environment Select Committee and a member of the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee. The Environment Committee has been tasked with reviewing the significant Fast-track Approvals Bill which received close to 27,000 submissions. We have just begun hearings which are expected to cover 5 weeks and unfortunately, a number of recess days which are generally opportunities to be back home and amongst the community.

An important part of the role is learning about the businesses and organisations across New Plymouth, Waitara, Ōpunake and the villages between, and hearing from constituents about the issues affecting their lives. My office at 37 Gill Street is there to help so please get in touch if you need information, advice or assistance. I also hold regular clinics in the office and around the community which are opportunities to meet with me. Keep an eye on my Facebook page for updates on these.

Some highlights so far have been delivering my maiden speech; attending Waitangi Day festivities at the Treaty Grounds; cutting my first ribbon to open Manga Hapahāpai, The Confidence Centre; and supporting the launch of New Plymouth’s Hiringa Energy green energy network. I have also enjoyed working with people to achieve positive outcomes, whether it’s families securing visas with Immigration New Zealand or businesses and individuals getting the right support.

I know there are complex issues in all corners of the electorate; healthcare in Waitara and constraints on the building sector come to mind. Be assured I am talking with relevant parties to better understand situations and prospective solutions, and I am encouraged by these conversations. I also know many concerns felt here, are felt around the motu, and our Government is focused on providing targeted relief and support. There are great things to come from Budget 2024 later this month, watch this space! In the meantime, please enjoy a small glimpse of the past six months below.

An incredibly humbling experience today attending and laying wreaths at ANZAC remembrance services in New Plymouth, Waitara and down the coast at Cape Egmont Boat Club.
