Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says it’s exciting to see Central Otago cherry growers riding a wave of success as sales soar on the back of Asian demand, providing employment and growth for the region.
“Central Otago growers should feel proud of what they have achieved for their industry, after many years of hard work, they are now providing employment and growth opportunities for the region.
“Their perseverance, in the knowledge that they have always had a product that had international appeal, now sees them reaping the benefits with hundreds of tonnes of cherries currently being picked for the Chinese market.
“News that Singapore Airlines has put on special charter flights to get tonnes of South Island cherries to Asia in time for Chinese New Year is exciting and reflects just how far this sector has come in terms of production.
“Once again we see the regions achieving economic success in their own right, with the Central Otago cherry industry providing local employment and growth for their community and beyond.”
