2007 Foreign Affairs, Defence & Trade Discussion Paper

by Hon Murray McCully, Foreign Affairs
02 October 2007

As a small, isolated, trade-dependent country, we rely on consistent and effective foreign affairs, defence, and trade policies.

After three decades of often-divisive debate in foreign policy, we now have a basis for enduring consensus. That's why National Party Leader John Key has launched our Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Discussion Paper titled "Focusing on our core strengths and capabilities".

This discussion paper outlines our thinking and includes a number of proposals to ensure New Zealand has a successful and dynamic foreign policy well into the 21st century.

Your feedback on this paper is important. It will help us develop policies in foreign affairs, defence, and trade that ensure New Zealand's future success in the Pacific and around the globe.

John begins this (17 minute and sometimes slow-loading) video with a snippet from his launch statement to the press.  Following that, Foreign Affairs Spokesman, Hon Murry McCully, walks the audience through the document, which is available on the National website in the Discussion Document section.  Following Murray's presentation, the video returns to the press Q&A with John, dealing intitially with questions about the paper and moving on into questions of a more general nature.
